LIFE AND LIVING

That day when Eric stood on his balcony and gazed blankly at the black out caused by the great clouds he could not help but think of that distant evening when he was on his way to ABL colony for computer tuition and something strange had happened. This is what excatly happened that day…

He was on a bike, wrapped in a rain coat for it was raining heavily. So heavy was the rain that the bike could not be driven and they had to take shelter in a nearby shop.

As they stood at the shop Eric looked at the surroundings. There was a field in front of them. Two little rag picker kids stood in one corner of the field, under a weathered and weaken tree to protect themselves from the torrential downpour. They held on to each other and as the rain caught up in the strong wind struck them, they shivered.

Next his eyes fell on some people sitting in their guarded balconies with a warm cup of any sort of beverage, probably tea or coffee. They were enjoying the scene outside and comfortably sipping their drink.

It saddened him to see that no one had the moral of calling those little kids in their houses for a bit of shelter.  Those people enjoyed watching the whole scene and yet it seemed that they did not notice those little sneezing and shivering kids.

That night before going to sleep, Eric wrote the following thing in his dairy :- ” OUR LIVING HAS ENHANCED. YUP, WE HAVE WELL BUILT SHELTERS, ENOUGH FOOD, PROPER TRANSPORT SYSTEM AND INDEED A LUXURIANT LIVING FOR THOSE WHO CAN AFFORD IT. I CANT IMAGINE OF A BETTER LIVING THAN THIS. BUT HAVE OUR LIVES ENHANCED. I AM TALKING OF THAT CRITICAL POINT WHERE LIFE AND LIVING HAVE DIFFERENT MEANINGS. SO HAVE OUR LIVES ENHANCED SUCH THAT WE CAN CALL OURSELVES HUMAN BEINGS OR SOCIAL ANIMALS. I DON’T THINK SO…

  1. Wonderful!! U have taken a U-turn from error -prone writing to error-free writing. Of course errors r there but they are
hardly 3 or 4 in number… huge improvement.. keep it up

And it hurts me so badly to think that the plight of the poor and the under privileged haven’t changed … they are there where they had been some 50 years back.. all of us right from the Government to common people and the south called social workers give them only the lip service… even me is not an exception
